A little reminder... some rules
Hi hikers,
I've sent out messages regarding this in the past, but we've had a lot of newcomers since the most recent posting and it's probably about time to remind everyone again.
As a group, I do require that everyone follow posted leash requirements wherever we hike. It is very important to me that NOVATD continue to be well-respected and welcomed on the trails in our area. When you hike with multiple dogs you are going to be noticed whether you're being confronted or not. The more dogs on the trail at a time, the more likely you are to attract attention.
It's always been my hope that we attract members who are fun and safe and don't need a bunch of restrictions to keep things from getting out of hand. Please don't put your organizer or any of the assistant organizers in an uncomfortable position of having to confront you to request that you follow leash requirements. If you show up to a hike and are unsure, just ask. If you're not sure before the hike and it makes a difference whether you RSVP or not, you can always contact us through Meetup email tools.
The only other dog hiking group that existed in the area before NOVATD (a group that is not part of Meetup) has many, many restrictions on both dogs and owners even down to the type of footwear allowed. Our members have it a lot easier than that group, but we can only continue to have relaxed rules if people continue to take responsibility for their own actions and the actions of their dog.
All we ask when you participate in one of our organized events is that your dog be friendly and socialized, you don't leave poo in the middle of the trail, you don't disturb wildlife or other trail users and you follow leash restrictions. Other than that, we just want everyone to have a good time!
We have a couple hikes on the calendar now and I'm planning another couple hikes to the national forest (where dogs can run off leash to their heart's content) as well as some biking events. Keep an eye on the calendar for events you'd like to attend, Ripley and I hope to see you out there soon!

PS - There is also a discussion and an open poll about on leash vs. off leash. Share you opinion and we'll hike where you want to go!
