Price

$5.32 per person
refund policy

First, you do not need to camp with us, or go to all the activities. You can just join us for the parts of the weekend you like. Here are the details:

CAMPING: There will be a per person charge of about $5 to camp at BRCES.
http://brces.org/...

Please pay the $5.32 RSVP fee upfront for each person in your party that will be camping. Since we are making a commitment to BRCES for the campsite, we also need you to commit as well so we can give them accurate numbers. If you're unsure, then do not RSVP 'yes' until you are. The $.32 is to cover the cost Meetup charges us for the fee setting.

ACTIVITIES: We will be hiking, eating, touring Breaux Vineyards, maybe a visit to Harpers Ferry for a walk and an ice cream (one for the pups too!), swim in the pond, etc... And of course we will be having a potluck cookout!
http://www.breauxvine...

ITINERARY:
Friday night: I will be at the campsite Friday night. If any of you will be joining me Friday night, please email me and let me know so I can make arrangements with you.
Saturday morning about 9am: Amy will lead a hike on the BRCES grounds. There are a variety of trails of varying lengths, so we'll decide then how far to go, depending on level of interest. For those of you who do not camp Friday night, please meet us at the campsite by 9am to join Amy.
Saturday afternoon about 1pm: I will set off up the road a couple miles to Breaux Vineyard. You can take your pooch into the tasting room. We'll have wine and snacks there on Breaux's beautiful grounds, then head back to camp about 6pm. You may either meet me at the campsite by 1pm, or join us at Breaux between 1 and 6.
Saturday evening: When we return to camp at about 6pm, we'll start breaking out the food and firing up the grill. You may meet us at the campsite at about 6pm.
Saturday night: Amy may lead a night hike on the trails at BRCES, depending on level of interest. I will be leading the continued feasting at the camp. So, you will have the choice of either.
Sunday morning: I anticipate most folks will break camp. I will lead a group to the beautiful little town of Harper's Ferry around 10-11 am. For Harper's Ferry, please meet us at the campsite by 10am.

WHAT TO BRING:
For your dog: Plenty of water, food, water and food bowls, leash, poo bags, first aid kit if you have one, a light for your dog's collar is handy to have too.
For the potluck: Your own beverages, a dish to share (salad, dessert), and something to grill. I will bring some wings but there may not be enough for everyone. Bring some burgers, or bratwurst, or kebobs, etc. Also, anyone who has a grill should bring it too, just in case. Never can have too many grills and coolers!
For hiking and camping: Be sure to bring your hiking clothes and shoes. Also bring a head lantern for doing stuff (including hiking) at night. Bring the usual camping gear and chairs. There are showers on site, so bring your shower stuff.
Other: Don't forget your camera!! Also you may wish to bring wet weather gear in case it rains.

SPEAKING OF WEATHER:
It's still a little far out to have a good idea of what the weather will do. Since just about everything we do will be outside, a soggy weekend will not be fun. We will keep an eye on the forecast and update those who RSVP 'yes' on that detail.

CONTACT INFO:
Closer to the date, I will send out cell phone numbers to everyone who RSVPs 'yes'. I will also send out directions to the campsite, Breaux, and Harper's Ferry town to those who RSVP 'yes'.

If you have any questions, please contact Holly or Amy.

Thanks!

Holly and Max, Amy and Ripley

-----Original-----
I want to do something with Ripley for the 4th of July this year but he's afraid of fireworks. So, let's head out to the hills for some hiking, a visit to a local winery, camping, star gazing, a cookout, etc...

This will be a combined event with VA Adventure Dogs.

Details will be posted soon re: location, time, activities, etc... but go ahead and put us on the calendar and come out and celebrate Independence Day with your pooch!

If you have any questions, please contact Holly or me.

Thanks,
Amy

PS Sarah: I am also unable to hike. I am recovering from a broken foot and my pup is recovering from a torn ACL (both injuries unrelated). So, we'll be holding the fort while Amy and others hike. You're welcome to hang with Max and me!

Concluded: You'll see a big covered picnic area in the field, that's where we are. If you're camping there, please walk down and get one of us first before trying to drive in there and we'll let you know if it is ok to drive in. Breaux is having live music on the 3rd and 4th. My cell is [masked] and I will have it with me all the time. I think I didn't have trouble with reception there last time. We look forward to seeing you all there!! PS: ALSO EMAILED THIS TO YES AND MAYBE PEEPS

Continued... Once you pass Breaux Vineyards on the right, go about 3.5 miles then start looking closely on the left: according to Google it is about 4.4 miles away from Breaux. Pull in off Harpers Ferry road, follow a dirt driveway to a parking area, follow parking area around to the left and at the end of it (in front or to the right) you'll see a roped off trail. The camping area is a field down that trail about .25 miles on the right. Continued...

Their website is not the easiest thing in the world to navigate... They do have a map here: http://www.brces.org/pdfs/B... I believe we'll be in the spot closest to the Headquarters parking. I'll check with Holly as I've never camped there but it's not a very big place so should be fairly easy to find us. And most assuredly I will have my flamingos out!

Should we expect any further details about campsites, etc before tomorrow? I'm expecting to arrive around 4 or 5. There is no map on the BRCES website, so if you can send out more details, that'd be great. Otherwise, I guess I'll just drive around looking for a pink flamingo?

hmmm I might be able to make that happen. I'll see. Usually I go for the precooked chicken ones stuffed with all sorts of good things like artichokes, feta cheese, peppers, etc. They seem safest when storage, cooking time, and cooking method is iffy. I like just putting them on a stick and resting it next to the fire and eating it off the stick :) But I suppose even those might benefit from a bit of soaking [shrug]

Looks like I missed some exciting conversation here! That's what happens when I get stuck in a room without phone, internet or my beloved Crackberry all day. Brats sound great Alex: I expect you'll be soaking them in some high-end beer? I will bring some marinated wings, some breakfast stuff (eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit) and I may even make some rum shortcakes. OK, gotta go back into the room without technology again.

I should insert a 'meat in my buns' joke, but I'll refrain, this is a family friendly site afterall! I'm a fan of peppadew myself, but a three pepper has my interest! Hooray for mustard and brats!

:) ok you bring the buns hon and I'll bring the meat ... yes everyone you heard me ... I said it ... but don't worry I'm mostly harmless >;-) As for the mustard, I have plenty I think but feel free to bring anything you like. I think I have a three pepper and I KNOW I have a horsradish mustard (my favorite).

Hmm, let's see here... if you bring brats, I'll bring some really tasty buns/bread for them and some really good mustard too. I've got a special 'treat' I'm bringing to share with all. It's a twist on a 4th classic. As far as something of substance, I'm bringing corn on the cob and sweet potatoes to do in the fire. I know that doesn't really help you much, Alex, but anything that goes well with the above I'm sure will be a hit. But brats are a good bet and I'll even get the good buns for ya!

Alright Amy and Holly ... you know I suck at good ideas for camp fire food other than my ol' standbye the posh flavored chicken brats ... so how about an idea or two on what I can bring to contribute? And yes I might just happen to bring some Sangria with me. OR even the ingrediants needed to make some out of the wine from Breaux :) I have another idea or two but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up in case I run out of time.

    •  Nora and I had a great time! We felt welcome on our first outing with the group and look forward to more adventures. A special thank you to everyone that went looking for Nora when she went AWOL Sat. night. I appreciated your concern so much! Thanks to Holly for the excellent grill work, and to all involved with planning this well organized event. I enjoyed meeting you all and I know Nora had a blast!

I think I'm finally recovered from the weekend, but that's more than I can say about Blake. He is still totally zonked out! I have officially decided that absolutely Nothing could have made this weekend better. Perfect campsite, perfect food, perfect group of dogs and humans, a perfect winery like 5 minutes away, perfect weather...shall I go on?! Blake really loved getting to know so many new dogs, and I had a great time getting to know the humans. Can't wait till next time!
    •  This event was wonderfully well organized and the organizers were fantastic.

We had such an amazing time...thanks so much to Amy and Holly for putting it on. It was great to meet everyone, and Luna had an absolute blast-limpy paw and all. I only wish I could have stayed longer. Hope to see you all on future meetups!...oh, and the setup didn't go so well today. Haha, I tried :)

Great to spend some time watching the dogs run around together! Another great camp site selection by Amy.

What a great weekend. Rip is still asleep and I'm told so is Bella... Bella the dog who never gets tired no matter what she does! The weekend was perfect, weather was just right: not too hot and very low humidity. We had one of the best (and biggest!) groups of dogs to any of our events yet. I still can't get over all the harmony among them. Happy, healthy, well-exercised dogs are always so well behaved! And the humans weren't so bad either! Tons of food, a relaxing visit to the vineyard for some "wine & cheese". I really appreciated the good impression we made there with such a large brood of dogs. I am sure our example did not go unnoticed by the other patrons and the staff. Thanks again to Holly for spearheading the event... give a girl an idea and she'll run with it, boy-o-boy!
